Lawn Trimmers - The Differences Between Gas, Electric and Cordless Lawn Trimmer Equipment

By Marcy Tate

Trimming and edging your grass helps to keep it healthy and looking good. If you keep up with good lawn maintenance which includes trimming and edging, then chances are that year after year, your grass will become healthier and stronger and look its best. Don't worry though - trimming and edging doesn't need to be done each time you mow the lawn. Edging (around curbs and sidewalks) can be done just a few times a year and trimming (around those hard to mow areas such as around the swing set, mailbox, flower bed, etc.) about after every 3-4 mowings. Trimming is easy too when you use the right type of equipment for your yard. Very small lawns can get away with manual shears but anything more than 1/4 of an acre of grass should use a larger trimming tool.

There are 3 Types of Trimmers: Gas, Electric-Corded, and Cordless.

Gas

* Usually weigh between 9-14 pounds
* Most powerful from all the trimmer types.
* Do the best job for large lawns.
* 2 Cycle Gas Trimmers- require that you mix oil and gas before you start.
* 4 Cycle Gas Trimmers- These are the best in trimmers. Look for one that exceeds EPA and CARB emission standards. These trimmers emit the least amount of harmful pollutants into the air.
* You can purchase a good quality gas trimmer for about $200.

Electric-Corded

* Usually weigh about 5 pounds.
* Cost the least when compared to the other types of trimmers.
* Considered inconvenient to some for having to drag the cord around from the inside to the outside.
* Good choice if you can reach any corner of your yard within 100' - 150' of an electrical outlet in your house.

Cordless

* The least powerful of the 3 choices.
* Runs on a battery which lasts only about 20 minutes.
* Great for those who have a very simple and small area to trim.
